Tuesday’s Tip Jar

Sometimes it can be super fun cool to add a little scratch kind of line to your posts. Ya like that? It’s really easy to do if you know the right code. Granted, some blogging platforms actually have the code right in the menu, but others don’t so if you fall into the others category then this tip is for you.

How to strike through your text:
Simply place a <s> before the text to be scratched through with a </s> after it.  In other words, THIS is done like <s>THIS</s>

Some other common codes to do the same thing (because you may have to play with it depending on your blogging platform) are:

<del>WORD</del> and <strike>WORD</strike>

*Always remember to add code like this in your HTML view*

Valentine’s Day is coming up and if you are looking for some fun crafts to do with your little ones the following links may be very helpful to you:

I hope you will find some fun on those sites – I know I already have a ton of ideas to put into play with my kids.  It’s gonna be fun!

If you have a button for your blog you may like to have others place it on their blogs. The only problem is that there are many people out there who don’t know how to do the code for that. That is why so many people choose to place code underneath a button for people to easily copy and paste on their blogs.

Below is an example of that code so you can do the same:

<textarea cols=”15″ rows=”5″><a href=”http://YOUR BLOG LINK HERE” target=”_blank”><img src=”http://YOUR IMAGE LINK HERE” border=”0″></a></textarea>

You can adjust the size of the area where the code appears by changing the cols and rows, however I have found that 15 and 5 work best for most blog sidebars. It is also a good idea to place your button above the code area so people can see what exactly it is they are placing on their site.

If you are the type of blogger who is interested in keeping people on your page and really building up readership then there is one piece of code that I highly recommend you use. It is a snazzy little thing that makes your links open up into a new browser window/tab. You may be wondering why this would be important and here is my reason: When you get new readers and they click a link from your site it is very easy for them to get sidetracked and never come back. If the link opens in a new window or tab, however, well then they will still have your site pulled up and upon closing out whatever the link was, voila!  They are still at your site and more tempted to keep reading and come back again.

So, you are now asking how to create this piece of code. Well, many of you may already know, but for those who don’t – when you put in a link if your blogging software has the option always choose “open link in new window”. If your blogging software does not have the option then go into the HTML view and add the code target=”_blank” to your link code. Below is an example:

Link Code:

<a href=”http://YOUR-LINK-HERE” target=”_blank”>LINK TITLE</a>

You see how that is inserted in there? It’s just that easy! A quick and simple way to make sure than once they leave they have no choice but to come back even if just for a few seconds.

Purge! Purge! Purge! And I don’t mean food! I am talking blogs ladies! The New Year has us cleaning out closets and working through life issues, but what about the blog? Have you taken a good look at your blog lately? I did just that and discovered that there was a lot of junk here on BlogMommas that I no longer wanted – so I purged! I deleted, I changed, I streamlined, and while on the very surface it may all look the same there is definite change that makes it so much better for me, for you, for search engines, and just for life.

So take stock of your blog, check to be sure you aren’t over widgetized, over categorized, and over dramatized. Delete what is necessary, change what needs changing, and start this blogging year off clean, crisp, and happy!
