Potting Training through “Sits”

I really hate potty training – seriously. I mean, there are a lot of things about parenting that can blow, but for me potty training is the big one. It took forever to train my son. He is 5 1/2 now and he is finally fully trained, but unlike many of my friends do with their kids I still have to take mine in and help him. Of course his situation is different, he has Autism. I still have to help him with his clothes and wiping and all that – but hey, at least he is diaper-free so I am happy!

My daughter is 3 1/2 and we are training her now. It has now been an ongoing process for a few months and she is so ready and capable, but so very stubborn! Just this past week I decided to get super serious and get down to business and I started using a method that I think while very hard work is simply fantastic for getting the job done – It is a method called “Sits” and so far she is having success.

Every hour – EVERY HOUR – on the hour I march her into the potty and sit her on it. Every hour, whether she has to go or not. She usually ends up going, and when she doesn’t go I make sure to tell her that she had a good try anyway.

It is almost like training me as well because I have to get her in there, but the pay off as you know is priceless.

My daughter can get fussy, “Oh, not again!” But I just let that slide off me and make her go anyway. Let’s face it, diapers are expensive and I am ready to save that money every month. I’m ready to not carry a diaper bag around everywhere. I’m ready to put her in some cute little undies that she gets to pick out all on her own. I’m ready for her to be a big girl.

I’m ready. She’s ready. And we are nearly there thanks to “Sits”.

What methods have worked for you?

  1. I used the same system – we sat on the potty every hour, and a few minutes after eating or drinking something. We also did a dance when we were successful used M&Ms as rewards. Plus, Mommy and Daddy celebrated when we used the potty too to set the example.
My little dude eventually “got it”. He’s been potty trained for months now, but sometimes still asks us if we went on the potty!

  2. BlogMom says:

Haha!!! That is too cute that he will still ask if you went, LOL!

Might as well juice that girl up! Give her water, fruit juice, and more water so she will have to go. Put on those big girl panties. Let her run around with those on.

  4. I wish they would invent a potty training boarding school! I’m training #7 with no success. The only thing I’ve learned through the years is to wait until they’re really ready. Too many accidents mean we shelve it for a couple more weeks.
